Scars & Blemishes

Treatments for Scars & Blemishes

When the skin heals, it may develop into a scar or blemish. These may become hypopigmented (lighter than normal skin) or hyperpigmented (darker than normal skin), flat, raised or indented. Some scars or blemishes resulting from skin conditions, such as acne, may also cause pitted skin.

Acne Scarring Treatments

Approximately 80% of people between 13-30 are affected by Acne. However, acne can have a much more lasting affect throughout a person's life time. Some people recover from acne without any permanent effects, but many people are left with mild or even severe acne scaring.

Scars are formed when spots that appear as a result of Acne are picked and squeezed. This then forms scabs. Scabs help to protect the healing process underneath and removing a scab off before it is ready interferes with the healing process.

Unprotected exposure to the sun can also cause more skin damage and will delay the healing process further. Which is another reason why wearing a good sunscreen is important.

The three main types of scars experienced are:

A. Ice-pick Scars

These are narrow scars (less than 2mm) and extend into the deep dermis or subcutaneous layer. These reason they are called Ice-pick Scars is because they appear as if the skin has been punctured with an ice-pick.

B. Boxcar Scars

Unlike Ice-pick scars, Boxcar scars are round to oval depressions that have sharp vertical edges (0.1-0.5 mm in depth) and they do not taper to a point at the base.

C. Rolling Scars

Rolling scars gives skin the appearance of rolling or undulating and occur as a result of tethering of otherwise normal-appearing skin to the subcutaneous tissue below.
